On Saturday in Las Vegas, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 1-0, and club president Joan Laporta attracted a lot of attention when he mentioned Lionel Messi.
According to Laporta, “I hope and wish that the Leo Messi chapter has not concluded at Barca.”
I believe it is our duty to make sure this chapter, which is still open and hasn’t been closed, has a moment in which it can be done as it should have been done and that it has a much more spectacular one than what it had.
Laporta’s remarks also seem to have some genuine substance, as the Barcelona manager Xavi reportedly urged the club president to check into getting Messi back to Camp Nou for the 2023–24 season, according to Spanish publication Sport.
The report claims that Xavi believes Messi can improve the team both on and off the field.
The Argentine star will officially be free to choose his next club after spending two seasons on a PSG contract that expires at the end of this season.
However, Messi will be 36 by the start of the 2023–24 season, thus any Barcelona reunion may rely on how he performs in this current season.
Why did Messi leave Barcelona?
Messi was basically obliged to go elsewhere for a new contract in 2021 due to financial problems at Barcelona that were made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even though the Argentine was apparently willing to reduce his pay in order to stay, the Catalan club was still unable to re-sign him in accordance with La Liga’s financial regulations.
Leo Messi and FC Barcelona reached an agreement, and both parties clearly intended to sign a new deal today, according to a press release from Barcelona on August 5, 2021. However, the agreement could not be formalized because of structural and economic barriers.
In March 2022, Laporta admitted that the choice to break ways wasn’t simple, but that it was made since it was in Barcelona’s best interests at the time.
“If I’m being honest, this is the worst choice I’ve ever made “Barca TV was told by Laporta.
“Although I don’t regret it, I would never have wanted to take it since I believe the institution comes first.
We came into contact with a reality, and as a result, we had to make that choice.
How did Messi and Xavi perform in Barcelona together?
Considering their mutual connection, there are several reasons why Xavi would want to bring Messi back to Barcelona.
When Barca was successful winning La Liga seven times and the UEFA Champions League four times they played 399 games together at the club.
On the field, Xavi and Messi displayed excellent connection, with the Argentine scoring 35 goals after receiving passes from the Spaniard.
A coaching and playing comeback would be intriguing and might give Messi the Barcelona farewell he didn’t get the first time.
