On September 22, 2026, at Jungfraujoch in the Swiss Alps, Adam Vinatieri sent an American football through goalposts positioned 3,454 metres—11,332 feet—above sea level. Guinness World Records certified it as the highest-altitude field goal ever made, according to the New England Patriots’ official announcement.
The setting was far removed from an NFL stadium. Organizers installed uprights on snow at the mountain destination known as the “Top of Europe,” surrounded by glaciers and peaks. The successful kick gave the 53-year-old Hall of Famer a new record more than six years after his final NFL appearance.
A familiar challenge in unfamiliar air
Vinatieri built his reputation by making difficult kicks in pressure situations, including famous postseason field goals for New England. This attempt replaced crowd noise with altitude, cold and swirling Alpine wind. In his account of the challenge, he said the thin air changed his breathing, heart rate and rhythm.
The NFL’s independent report confirmed the date, location, certified altitude and snowy conditions. It also noted that Vinatieri had not made an official NFL kick since December 1, 2019, when he was still with the Indianapolis Colts.
Jungfraujoch is not simply a scenic summit chosen for a photograph. The high-Alpine site is reached by railway and sits within the Jungfrau-Aletsch area. At 3,454 metres, the air contains substantially less oxygen than at sea level, while snow and wind complicate a kicker’s plant foot, timing and ball flight. The unusual environment is what turned an otherwise routine motion into a record attempt.
One more record for football’s scoring leader
The Alpine kick fits an extraordinary statistical career. Guinness World Records lists Vinatieri as the NFL career leader with 599 made field goals from 1996 through 2019. Its database also credits him with a record 715 attempts.
His official Pro Football Hall of Fame profile records a 24-season career, four Super Bowl victories and 2,673 points. He played his first 10 seasons for the Patriots and the next 14 for the Colts, becoming the league’s all-time scoring leader.
The mountain event was staged by the Patriots and Jungfrau Railways as part of the build-up to New England’s November game in Munich. That promotional purpose does not diminish the certified achievement: goalposts had to be transported and installed in the snow, a legendary retired kicker had to adjust to extreme elevation, and the ball still had to clear the crossbar. Vinatieri’s most elevated field goal was also, quite literally, the highest of them all.
