Shaquille O’Neal built his basketball legend close to the rim. He powered through defenders, shattered backboards and turned dunks into routine punctuation. Yet one of the strangest shots of his 19-season NBA career came from 32 feet away.
On February 16, 1996, O’Neal’s Orlando team hosted Milwaukee. As the first quarter expired, the giant center launched a long heave that banked in. A contemporary UPI game report describes the 32-foot buzzer-beater, while the Basketball-Reference box score records O’Neal going one-for-one from three-point range.
A perfect night from an imperfect distance
O’Neal scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in only 32 minutes as Orlando won 121-91. He made 13 of 21 field-goal attempts, but the statistical curiosity is that tiny “1” in the three-point column.

Why Shaq almost never needed the shot
The statistic sounds bizarre now because modern centers are often expected to stretch the floor. O’Neal played a different game. At more than seven feet tall with extraordinary strength and explosiveness, his best possessions ended at the basket, not behind the arc.
A three-point attempt was therefore usually a desperation heave rather than part of the offense. The 1996 shot fit that pattern perfectly: the clock was disappearing, the distance was extreme and nobody expected the center to treat it like a normal scoring option.
The contrast makes the fact unforgettable
O’Neal ultimately became a four-time champion and one of basketball’s defining interior forces. The official NBA player profile documents a career spent overwhelmingly inside the arc. His one made three did not change how opponents defended him, and it did not inspire a new long-range phase.
That is exactly why the moment survives. A player famous for making the paint feel too small briefly scored from a place he almost never visited. One attempt on that night, one banked buzzer-beater—and one career three-pointer.
