A football match lasts 90 minutes, but one of the Premier League’s most extraordinary records was created in less time than a typical song. On 16 May 2015, Sadio Mané scored three times for Southampton against Aston Villa in just two minutes and 56 seconds.
The official Premier League records page still lists the 176-second burst as the competition’s fastest hat-trick. It happened at St Mary’s Stadium during Southampton’s final home match of the 2014/15 season.
Three goals before Villa could recover
Mané opened the scoring in the 13th minute after reacting to a flick-on and finishing at the second attempt. Aston Villa barely had time to restart before another defensive mistake gave him his second. For the third, Shane Long delivered the ball from the right and Mané met it first time, sending a precise finish into the top corner.
By the 16th minute, Southampton led 3–0. The Guinness World Records entry confirms both the time and the setting: Mané’s three goals came in 2:56, and Southampton eventually won 6–1.
The scoring did not stop with the record. Long added two goals, including a spectacular long-range effort, and Graziano Pellè completed Southampton’s six. Christian Benteke scored Villa’s only goal shortly before half-time.
A record broken by more than a minute
Before that afternoon, the Premier League benchmark belonged to Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler. He had scored three times against Arsenal in four minutes and 33 seconds in August 1994. Mané cut an astonishing 97 seconds from a record that had survived for more than two decades.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that Mané did not know he had made history while playing. In a later Premier League interview, he recalled that the referee told him about the record after the match.
Fast in England, but not everywhere
Mané’s feat is the Premier League record, not the fastest league hat-trick ever recorded anywhere. UEFA’s survey of rapid European trebles notes historical examples from other competitions that were reportedly even quicker, including Valentino Mazzola’s two-minute hat-trick for Torino in 1947. Comparisons across eras can be difficult because older match timing was not always recorded with modern precision.
Within the Premier League, however, the evidence is clear. Three different finishes, one breathless spell, and a record that remains attached to a sunny afternoon at St Mary’s: 176 seconds in which almost every Southampton attack seemed destined to become a goal.
